Anisette Durande holds the destiny of a free Brittany in her hands, desperate to keep the Madonna Rosa from the Germans as the Nazi onslaught rolls across defenseless France in 1940. She is La Guardienne - the last of a line of women descended from a lone survivor of a terrible slaughter, blessed to protect the ancient Madonna carved from the crucifix of the Christian martyrs of Roman Lyon. Her only hope is a chance encounter with a young British soldier on the road, himself fleeing the Germans toward an evacuation port on the Brittany coast. Scotty promises to return the Madonna to her - somehow...yet becomes lost in the greatest naval catastrophe in British history. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Kurt J. Haak. In the year 1917, in a mountainous region at the center of Portugal, the Mother of God appeared six times to three young children. Elsewhere on the continent the “Great War” raged, that would cost Europe an entire generation, over 37 million lives. Besides sending her own sons to die (in France and North Africa) Portugal was in political chaos at home. There was a dizzy succession of governments following a revolution in 1910. The monarchy had been replaced by a republic, with a new liberal constitution separating Church from state. Government officials, under the influence of Freemasonry, were not sympathetic to the Faith. But for the people themselves, the Faith was the air they breathed, as in the village of Aljustrel, a collection of whitewashed houses on a dusty road in the parish of Fatima. There Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta were born and raised in homes where the catechism was their daily bread, stories from the Bible their recreation, and the word of the village priest was law. Lucia de Jesus Santos was born, the youngest of seven children, to Antonio and Maria Rosa Santos, on 22 March 1907. She was a plain child with sparkling eyes and a magnetic personality, a natural leader to whom other children looked with confident affection. Blessed with an excellent memory, Lucia was able to learn her catechism, and make her First Communion and Confession, at age six. She herself became a catechist at nine. Lucia would be the constant guide and companion to her first cousins, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, through the trials that accompanied the apparitions of the Blessed Mother... In rural Portugal of 1916 it would not have been unusual to see children leading their family flocks to pasture. This is what the children of the Marto and Santos families, cousins all, did on many days. Often it was Lucia Santos, Francisco Marto and his sister Jacinta, who gladly undertook this chore, grateful for the chance to be outdoors and to play as the sheep silent 1. Language: English. Paul Smith's Cycling Scrapbook

This lively 'scrapbook' seeks to illustrate Paul Smith's favourite people, races and places in the cycling world through the romantic and beautiful images and places that inspired him. From his collection of cycling jerseys and his extensive library of cycling publications and brochures of the 1950s and 1960s, to the inspiration he has found in his cycling heroes (Coppi, Anquetil, Bartali) and his collaborations with bike-makers (Mercian and Pinarello) and race organizers, this is a personal and highly visual journey that connects Smith's love of cycling with his love of design. One climax to this parallel career came in 2013, when he was invited to design the legendary maglia rosa - the pink jersey worn by the leader of the Giro dItalia, which was blessed by Pope Francis I and presented to the winner.Ultimately, this is not merely a book about one man's enthusiasm for a sport, but an insight into how the people, stories and imagery that fill this passion have influenced one of the most successful personalities in the design world.

This book tells the story of a marvellous mother: the Blessed Eurosia Fabris Barban (1866-1932), the first person to be beatified outside Rome during the pontificate of Benedict XVI, which event took place in Vicenza on 6th November 2005. This book tells the story of the simple, humble life of a woman of the common people, who dedicated herself totally and heroically to her love for her family. She had nine children, of whom three became priests, and also welcomed another three into her family as adopted children. Profoundly at one with Christ, in an intense Christian existence forged by prayer and charity, she opened up her pure and gentle heart, making her own life and that of whoever met her full of happiness and unshakeable joy in Divine Providence. Eurosia, which means in Greek 'of a sound bodily constitution and inner character' had a particular devotion to the Holy Spirit, was drawn to Eucharist Adoration, put her trust always in the help of Our Lady who never fails and constantly prayed for souls waiting to be called to eternal glorification. She understood that to live a Christian life was both the simplest and the most beautiful choice that anyone could make, a choice of 'peace and goodwill'. A seamstress and catechist in her own parish of Marola (Vicenza), she enriched her own natural beauty with that which came from her Christian way of life, following faithfully the Rule of the Franciscan tertiaries, and having the gift of inner dialogue with Jesus himself. 'Mother Rosa' as she is known amongst the simple and humble people of the diocese of Vicenza, in Italy and in the United States, has heard the prayers of many of the faithful, above all those of young wives, not only interceding for them with the gift of maternity but also favouring adoptions and helping young seminarians in difficulty, encouraging them to follow their vocation and actively supporting their families.

Alabama in the Twentieth Century

Alabama is a state full of contrasts. On the one hand, it has elected the lowest number of women to the state legislature of any state in the union; yet according to historians it produced two of the ten most important American women of the 20th century--Helen Keller and Rosa Parks. Its people are fanatically devoted to conservative religious values; yet they openly idolize tarnished football programs as the source of their heroes. Citizens who are puzzled by Alabama's maddening resistance to change or its incredibly strong sense of tradition and community will find important clues and new understanding within these pages. 'Wayne Flynt is a marvelous writer and story teller with exceptional powers of discernment and a good-natured ability to interpret fairly and critically. This is quite possibly the single most important book on Alabama history.'--Jonathan Bass, author of 'Blessed Are the Peacemakers: Martin Luther King Jr., Eight White Religious Leaders, and the Letter from the Birmingham Jail 'Wayne Flynt's insight into the people of Alabama, past and present, is unmatched. Anytime I see his byline on an op-ed piece in a newspaper I read it because I know my own insight will be sharpened. He reminds me of a stern but devoted parent who doesn't hesitate to apply tough love when it's necessary. He is a historian of the first rank, but he's also a regular guy with that most uncommon of traits, namely, common sense. 'Alabama in the Twentieth Century will enlighten and reward anyone who reads it and reflects on its message.'--Clyde Bolton, author of 'Nancy Swimmer, A Story of the Cherokee Nation and retired sports columnist
